Focusing on a segment of an possible audience - a well defined segment is niche marketing.

Lets use an example to make this clear: You are an Internet Marketing freak and you want to offer a consulting service.

Your first step should be to ask yourself:

Who is my customer?

Everyone who is interested in earning money on the internet seems to be your audience.

But this is sure no niche and there is no way to have a clear picture of the problems people face.

Use excel to segment this list. It is important to think of prospects with same intrests.

Here some ideas:

People who want to start their home business people who have an existing offline business and want to add internet to their marketing portfolio people who already started with internet marketing but have not succeeded till now …

Not bad, but you should segment this even more:

Use the above and find segments in the group.

Consultants who have not used the internet till now for their offline office or even more targeted - lawyers who want to add internet to their marketing portfolio

Last step is to segment the list horizontally

Now find the problems they people in this targeted fields have. Brainstorm a bit and add them to your excel spreadsheet.

For example - a person who works in a 8 hour day job and wants to start his online business - this person will want to know how to start it in the space time he has.

The lawyer on the other hand may want to use the internet to drive targeted customers to his practice 24 hours 7 days a week.

Now you have a matrix where you find possible customers with their problems.

Now what do you do with all this?

With the knowledge you now have - it is a lot easier to create products and write salesletters. As you know to whom you speak and the problems he faces.

And with tiny changes you will be able to sell your product to other niches.
