Affiliate Marketing News: Researching the Right Niche Keywords

Category: Affiliate Marketing

by Alexander Bee

This is the second article in the “Affiliate Marketing News” series, describing step #2 on your way to successful affiliate marketing. In the first step I gave you some ideas on how to find the right products to promote. The second step is keyword research.

I guess you know by now what “long tail keywords” are. Phrases of three or more words are considered “long tail keywords.” Here is a quick example so you immediately understand what it’s all about.

Let’s say your hobby is sewing and you found a great sewing patterns product. Google the key phrase “sewing patterns” and you will discover there are over 1,300,000 results to your search! In no way do you want to enter into this kind of competition. But if you search for the exact phrase “sewing patterns online,” Google will return only 10,600 results. When you are done reading this series of articles you will see that you could dominate this niche.

I have a tool that also tells me how many sites are actually optimized for this phrase. I can tell you right now that only 4 (that’s a four!) out of these 10,600 are optimized for “sewing patterns online.” True, the same wonderful tool tells me that “sewing patterns” is searched 176,000 times a month, while “sewing patterns online” is searched only 4,500 times a month.

But this is a nice search volume and if you add to it the long tail phrase “sewing patterns costumes,” which gets another 2,000 searches and has zero optimized sites, and if you learn how to take advantage of these facts (which I will explain in a future article) - you can start your promotion and dominate the search engines’ results for these two key phrases.

Performing a thorough keywords research is the most essential step for achieving a lucrative promotion. This is the backbone of any successful online marketing business. Your first search should be for online resources that would help you researching.

Start by using the broadest terms: “cooking,” “diet,” “golf,” and move on by digging deeper until you reach the long tail keywords. Keep checking on Google and the other search engines; find what the volume of searches is. Eventually you will find 3-4 phrases of 3-5 words with a few thousands of monthly searches and a low competition in the form of optimized sites.

As I said, keywords research is the main step in our plan to reach success affiliate marketing. It would be wise if you invest your utmost in this stage. You can find many helpful resources online, free or relatively cheap, which will save you time and efforts.

See you in a couple of days in article #3, where I will discuss the ways to promote your products online.
